Late enrolment in the academic year 2018-2019

Did you know that it is possible to enroll late? From today, 8th October, till next 12th November , the University of Turin allows new enrolments, paying a surcharge for late payment.

Together with enrolment, you will have to sign up for the TARM too. You can sign up until 15th October 2018 for bachelor’s degree and master’s degree courses in Italian concerning the Scuola di Management ed Economia (School of Management and Economics), the Scuola di Scienze Umanistiche (School of Human sciences)  and the Scuola di Scienze Giuridiche, Politiche ed Economico-Sociali (School of law and political, economic and social sciences).

As regards the courses in English, you can sign up for the TARM till 12th October (by 12.30 am). The test will take place on 23rd October 2018 in the Aula Magna of the Campus Luigi Einaudi (Lungo Dora Siena, 100a – Torino).

RiStory, the short story festival

Turin is to be discovered, not only in its urban fabric, but also in the metropolitan one. In the cities which surround Turin the culture is moving and leads to unique events.  One of these is RiStory, a festival entirely centered on short stories, which will take place in Rivalta di Torino. RiStory lasts three days (from 5th to 7th October 2018) and wants to rediscover a literary genre, the one of short stories, which is often obscured by the large and popular fame of the novel.

The rooms of the library and the Castello di Rivalta, ancient castle on the Trebbia valley, will house this first festival, planned by the artistic director Alessandro Perissinotto, writer and university teacher in Turin.

With reading, meetings with school students and artistic contamination between music and narration, RiStory wants to become a place of national cultural debate, by restoring and conveying high values of literature, trough a genre that is popular and easy to reach.

The aim, said Nicoletta Cerrato, cultural councilor in Rivalta, is to create a permanent workshop on short stories, also thanks to the important partnerships with the Università degli Studi di Torino  and the Teatro Stabile. In fact, together with the festival, will also start Lab, a literary monthly hothouse, whose audience, guided by writers and scholars, will be able to think about the writing of short stories.

The first guest of RiStory will be the writers Dario Voltolini and Maurizio De Giovanni, together with the president of the Ordine dei Giornalisti, Alberto Sinigallia, and the musicians Massimo Bubola and Boosta. Everyone of them has a great interest in short stories.

UniToGo: sustainable university and mobility

The Mobility Group of UniToGO, during the European mobility week, is happy to invite you on 20th September 2018 at the Campus Luigi Einaudi to the day Università è mobilità sostenibile.

 Everyone who is going to go to the Campus Einaudi in the morning by bike will be able to take part in Bike to work – Giretto d’Italia 2018, organized together with Legambiente and CNH Industrial, the national initiative which promotes the use of the bike. Participating in simple: you just have to go to the Campus Einaudi by bike, stop at the check point in the bike parking (D4), take a photo on the bike with the special frame of the Giretto and share the picture on your Facebook, Instagram or Twitter profile with the hashtag #Giretto2018. You can win a wonderful electric folding bike New Holland!

The Main Hall of the Campus will house all day long the photography exhibition “Passeggiando in bicicletta” by Cosimo Cardea.

In the afternoon, from 2:30 pm, there will be a seminar where will be presented both the actions by UniTo to improve sustainable mobility as per services, research and didactics and the activities of the Mobility Group of the “Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo sostenibile”. The new framework law on cycling mobility, recently approved, will also be a topic of the conference.

The day will end with the pedalata universitaria Unibike (university bike ride), organized together with the associations Greento, EcoPoli Green Team Students, Bike Pride-Fiab and CUS Torino. The ride bike will start at 5:30 pm in the bike parking (D4) and the route will go on in the city centre, till the Politecnico di Torino.

Seeyousound, a Performing Arts’ contest

Seeyousound, un contest per il DAMS

Seeyousound, Turin’s musical film festival, starting on January 25, 2019 for its 6th time, announces a contest in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Torino. The contest involves students from  DAMS, Corso di Laurea in Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo (Degree course in Performing Arts) and aims to promote productions on the relation between images and sounds.

Contestants can submit musical videos, also known as “promotional videos”, or any production which give a new take on the relation between music and images. Videos can be recorded with any technique: with or without CGI; animated; etc. Maximum length is 5 minutes. Images and music must be original.
Each contestant may only submit one video.

Participation is free and may be in groups or individually.
The contest is exclusively for Performing Arts’ students from any city.

NeuroPsicoTOFest! Three days with Neuroscience

The Il NeuroPsicoTOFest  begins with three days (June 27, 28 and 29, 2018) dedicated to neuroscience.

The main actor of the festival will be the Department of Neuroscience( Dipartimento di Neuroscienze), centre for excellence of the Università di Torino, named after Rita Levi Montalcini, great scientist from Turin who took her first career steps in these buildings. Founded in 2012, the department has a multi-disciplinary approach, aimed to join different academic, clinical and biomedical traditions in the study of the nervous system.

At Palazzo degli Istituti Anatomici in corso Massimo D’Azeglio, 52, which houses the Museo Lombroso, di Anatomia e della Frutta, researchers will present the results they obtained and future aspirations of studies carried out until now. During the conference, Turin’s science history will be remembered, as well as its main representants: Carlo Giacomini, Giuseppe Levi and Rita Levi Montalcini. New methods of multidisciplinary analysis, between Neuroscience and Psychology, will also be examined: from non-invasive brain stimulation, to the study of brain mechanisms of traumatic memories, and the subject of Neurodegeneration.

Italian for foreigners: “Torino Università Estate” Summer School

The Italian Summer School for Foreigners  takes place twice a year:

July 4 marks the 20th year of Italiano, arte e cultura (“Italian, art and culture”), the Italian Summer School for Foreigners, organised by the Comitato Torino Università Estate (TUE) of the Università degli Studi di Torino, in collaboration with Centro Linguistico di Ateneo CLA-UniTO and Città di Torino.

In 2018, it will take place from July 4 to July 26. The intensive language course, held by qualified professors, include a wide variety of cultural activities: seminars, tours, day trips, tastings and many other opportunities to learn about and appreciate completely the Piedmontese region. For 20 years, the strenght of our Summer Schools has been the chance of combining a high-quality Italian language course with the experience of an unforgettable holiday in Piedmont. A full-immersion in the Italian culture with TUE staff, young interns of the University of Turin and Master students of the Dipartimento di Lingue Straniere in Promozione e Organizzazione turistico-culturale del Territorio.

Since 1998, TUE Summer Schools have started a twenty-year-old tradition of excellence in teaching L2 Italian, becoming a project of promotion of our area and of our cultural heritage for foreigners coming from every part of the world.

The Summer School is oriented towards students, teachers, professors, doctors, researchers and scholarship recipients, but also to freelancers and foreign workers, citizens living in Turin and everyone who is interested in studying Italian. Courses are available in all levels, from pre-A1 to C1, according to the criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference. This year, there will be a chance for foreign students of gaining ECTS credits which they can use in their University.

Law school: law clinics against human trafficking

The University of Turin promotes Law Clinics, already common abroad. The clinical-legal method teaches law based on real cases, by applying codes to concrete contexts. Five clinics have been launched at the Law Department (Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza), each one dedicated to a different issue: inmates and former inmates; refugees and migrants; homeless people; disabled people; and human trafficking victims.

Clinics work like traditional university courses, but unlike the latter, provide more in-depth law concepts, promote social justice and allow concrete access to rights and justice. The history of clinic laws is recent: they started as an experimental project in 2015-1016 academic year, and became fully operational last year. Now, 10 students are participating, divided in pairs among 8 institutions, including Comune di Torino.

The collaboration with the Comune took place in the Anello Forte project (progetto Anello Forte), an initiative  by Regione Piemonte to face human trafficking and exploitation, It aims to identify victims as soon as possible, and consequently to protect them and include them socially. Until now, 19 victims have been identified by the students, who are also establishing 6 legal memories, of which no results are yet available.

The work of the clinic is part of the Third Mission activities: returning knowledge to the area. Alongside education and research, the civic engagement of the University is gaining importance, putting new generations at the service of society, allowing students to have a valid experience in the field and the chance to apply what they have learned in the classroom.

The clinic arranges meetings with the alleged victims – of 11,000 Nigerian women who disembarked in Sicily from Libya, 80% are victims of human trafficking, according to the data from IOM (International Organization for Migration) – and, with the presence of a cultural mediator, it commits to know whether it’s possible to activate international protection. Students then must write a legal record, together with a reconstruction of the victim’s story.

Fondazione CRUI is promoting a call for the selection of 16 curricular interships in Italian schools abroad.

The network of schools abroad is a resource to promote Italian language and culture, as well as to preserve the cultural identity of Italians and their children.

Internships listed in the call will be held in the 8 comprehensive state schools in Addis Abeba, Asmara, Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Madrid, Paris e Zurich.

Interns will carry out researches, studies, analyses and processing useful data for each school’s dossier. Students may also be involved in the organisation of events and help MAECI and school staff in outdoor activities.

Unito Museums: The Botanical Garden

The University of Turin has a museum heritage, often little-known outside the usual tourist route. Its university collections include objects and artifacts used to prove academic theories, gathering evidence and teaching students through field lessons.

Gathering to prove. This has always been common to humans since ancient times. Historically, collecting has always been linked to teaching, mostly in the field of natural science. Teaching collections begin when a culture begins: from Hortus medicus of Chinese emperor Sheng Nung, to the gardens of Pharaohs and Assyrian Kings, from the museum-school of Ur to the botanical gardens of Aristotle’s Lyceum  and of the ptolemaic Museion.

Turin’s Botanical Garden is the oldest university museum in Turin: it was founded in 1729 by Vittorio Amedeo II and has almost 300 years of history. The Garden was designed for cultivation and culture: cultivating a large number of plants, and informing about their properties, their uses and their characteristics.

Only recently, since 1997, the museum has opened its doors to the general public, not only academic. According to the website of the Institution, about 8,000-10,000 people of all ages visit the Botanical Garden every year. Going through the Grove, the Alpine Garden, the Garden, the Tropical Greenhouse, the Succulent Greenhouse and the New Greenhouse, visitors can find a variety of scents, colours and biodiversity.

Many events are held during summer in order to experience the idyllic setting of the open-air museum. The programme includes thematic tours, food&drinks, and readings.

Torino Pride: the role of universities in the fight against discrimination

Tomorrow, Friday June 15, 2018 at 5.30 pm, in the Corte Interrata of the Politecnico di Torino (Room 8I), there will be a talk on “Il patrocinio al Torino Pride e il ruolo dell’Università nella lotta alle discriminazioni” (“sponsoring Torino Pride and the role of University in the fight against discrimination”).

Almost 50 years after the beginning of the fight for the recognition of fundamental rights, the LGBTTQI* (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, etc.) community still has too many unsatisfied and unheard demands. The community is trying to call attention on the dark and too often “slow” times we are living, concerning discrimination, violence and protecting rights.

The talk will analyse the role universities must play in the fight against discrimination, in a time marked by reactionary attitudes and exclusion of diversity. That’s why, along with the full participation of the University of Turin and of the Politecnico to the big party for the rights of the community – Torino Pride 2018 on Saturday, June 16 – there will be an area of discussion and analysis of LGBTQI topics in a particular setting: university.
