The University of Turin is among the best universities in the world according to the Arwu (Academic Ranking of World Universities), the international ranking created by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and published in August 2022. UniTo is ranked fifth among the 46 Italian Universities, equally with the University of Bologna, the University of Naples Federico II and the Politecnico di Milano.

Worldwide the University of Turin is positioned between 201-300 among 2.500 universities, behind La Sapienza, the university of Rome (between 101-150 worldwide) and the Universities of Milan, Padua and Pisa (between 151-200). The
ranking system was created considering six indicators: graduates and professors with Nobel prizes or Fields Medal prizes; the most quoted researchers; articles on Nature or Science; number of publications on Web of Science; per capita performances.

In the new edition of the Subject Ranking of Shanghai in August 2022 UniTo has positioned between 51-75 in Food Science and Technology, between 76-100 in Agricultural Sciences, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, in Physics and in Veterinary Sciences. Other excellent positions were reached by Dentistry’Oral Sciences, Mathematics and Medical Technology, which are stable in the top 200.

The Politecnico di Torino has achieved an excellent result in the QS World University Rankings, one of the world’s most  famous international rankings published every year by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds. In fact, the Politecnico ranked in the top 25% of the best universities in the world, going from the top 25.7% to the top 22.9%, and thus consolidating the upward trend of the past few years.

The Politecnico moved up 9 positions in the world ranking, going from 334 th place to 325th. This result was achieved in spite of the fact that 124 new universities, which were not listed last year, entered the ranking for the first time. This ranking has highlighted, among other positives, the constant improvement of the Politecnico in the Citation per Faculty score, which is a measure of the quality of research being done at an institute. This score is based on the number of citations in scientific publications written by the researchers at a particular university. The Citation per Faculty score puts
the Politecnico in 236th place; this means that the university has moved up 23 places compared to last year.

The Politecnico also moved up 17 places in the ranking of foreign students, confirming its international appeal, and as far as the academic reputation is concerned, it moved up another

This morning at the Politecnico di Torino the first graduates in the "Climate Change" orientation of the master’s degree course in Environmental and Territorial Engineering were announced. The first one is Vittorio Giordano, former graduate of the first level at the Politecnico di Torino, who discussed
a thesis on the future prospects of the water footprint of crops in the African continent, with the support as supervisors of engineer Marta Tuninetti and Professor Francesco Laio, currently Director of the Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI) of the University.
The second one to be proclaimed is Yara Hammoud, a student from the Lebanese American
University, who discussed a thesis on the modeling of the role of the cryosphere in the definition of the
ground temperature in the Alpine area characterized by permafrost. Her supervisors were Professor
Jost von Hardenberg and two external supervisors from ARPA Piemonte, Dr. Christian Ronchi and Dr.
Luca Paro.

The master's degree course in Engineering for the Environment and the Territory of the
Politecnico di Torino trains future engineers able to address environmental challenges involving the
interaction between natural components (air, water, soil, biosphere) and humans and to develop
sustainable solutions for human activities. From the academic year 2019/2020, alongside the existing
orientations in Environmental Protection, Natural Hazards and Civil Protection and Geo-Engineering, a
new orientation dedicated to &Change" has been activated. The orientation, is entirely
offered in English, thus becoming the first engineering course in Europe dedicated to climate change,
with the aim of preparing a new generation of environmental engineers capable of responding to the
environmental and social challenges arising from climate change, and to seize the opportunities of the
future labor market.
"Improving the quantity and quality of agricultural production, ensuring sustainable adaptation to climate
change, is one of the major global challenges to facilitate the ecological transition – explains engineer
Marta Tuninetti with reference to Giordano's thesis. While, in relation to Hammoud's thesis,
Professor Jost von Hardenberg notes, "Permafrost degradation represents one of the most significant
impacts in the Alpine area of ongoing climate change, and numerical snowpack modeling represents a
fundamental tool for understanding the phenomenon and developing future scenario projections.

Culture and Tourism in the digital era: the challenge for university students from Politecnico and UniTo kicks off.

The 30 students that will participate in the challenge “Culture and Tourism in the digital era” issued by Contamination Lab of Turin with the collaboration of Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” will try to answer questions that are very relevant today, such as “How will the digital change the mechanism to valorise identities and artistic heritage? How will the world of exhibitions and history of artworks change? What changes will the actors of the sector undergo?”

The aim is to come to interesting conclusions that combine culture and technology, two fields that are extremely interconnected today and can enhance
the other’s strengths.
Students will come up with solutions to innovate exhibition modalities and restoration to valorise our city’s cultural heritage. They will start from understanding the various factors relative to a specific ecosystem, always keeping in mind the “new normalcy” we are living in that influences our relationship with our cultural heritage. Thus, the aim is to develop idea to answer to the digitalization of culture and its effects.

Research Centre for Women and Gender Studies (CIRSDe) recently published a new guide about Università di Torino programmes with a gender-based
perspective. It is an interesting a helpful tool for any UniTo student to approach and explore gender studies. In fact, it offers an overview on the active courses in the various Departments of Turin that have focused on a gender-based perspective.

There are few Gender Studies courses in Italian universities and we advise you visit CIRSDe website to find out more about Doctorates, master’s degrees or
advanced courses on this subject. In the past few years in Italy, the need to address not only issues related to the disparity between men and women but
also the LGBTQ+ community has arisen. We hope that in next year’s guide we will be able to put more Gender Studies courses, so that the academic world in Turin will be even more inclusive.

Polito: cultura e mobilità studentesca

The management board of the Politecnico has decided to renew for the academic year 2018/2019 the initiatives for mobility and culture which enable students of Polito, who are enrolled full-time, to benefit from reductions on the purchase of travel tickets and  the Abbonamento musei (tickets for museums).

In order to benefit from these initiatives for mobility and culture, students will have to send an explicit request following the procedure available on their personal page by 28th December 2018.

Here are some important news of the academic year 2018-2019, about both requirements to benefit from reductions and the procedures that will followed to allocate them.

From 3rd September 2018, the procedure will give – ONLY TO THE ONES WHO HAVE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS – the possibility to ask for reductions. You can find requirements at the end of this communication. The possibility to ask for the refund of travel tickets will be viewable only after the assignation of the definite contributing level.

REFUND OF TRAVEL TICKETS

As concerns travel tickets, it is confirmed the “refund” system: during the online procedure, you will have to attach the scan of the receipt of purchase of the season ticket, in which there have to be biographical data of the student. Season tickets which can be refunded: season tickets purchased from 1st July 2018 to 28th December 2018 which last from 10 to 12 months (tickets lasting a week or a month won’t be accepted) of any transport net, with which you can reach the Politecnico (GTT, Trenitaluian Arriva-Sadem, …).

In contrast to the academic year 2017/2018, also students with a revenue above 30.500 euros can benefit from the reduction, if they have merit requirements, as established in the Legge di Bilancio 2017 and reported in the table below. For everyone, the maximum refund will vary according to the definite contributing level,  according the table which follows.

It will be necessary to fill out the request for reductions (or attest through the procedure that you don’t want to ask for a reduction) by 28/12/2018, so that you have a definite economic level for the academic year 2018/2019.

The refund will be automatically allocated to the student (you cannot decide to leave the sum as credit on the virtual current account or collect it any longer): to fill out the procedure for the request of reductions you will have to select in the section Fees and Reductions of the Online secretary’s office, the mode you want to receive the refund.

ISEE PoliTO Contributing level PoliTO Maximum sum that can be refunded*
till a 30.500 euros 1 – 19 208 euros
from 30.501 euros to 35.500 euros 20 – 24 150 euros
from 35.501 euros to 50.500 euros 25 – 39 100 euros
above 50.500 euros 40 – 75 50 euros

*the value of the season ticket will be refunded if less than or equal the maximum sum; if it is greater, the maximum sum will be refunded.

ABBONAMENTO MUSEI (MUSEUM TICKETS)

As concerns the Abbonamento Musei, since in the academic year 2017/2018 many free tickets have been requested and then few have been actually used (with a significant cost for the community), the management board has decided to repeat the initiative for the academic year 2018/2019, but asking the students to demonstrate their real interest with a little sharing to the cost (8 euros.)

The sum has to be given together with the request, following the instructions of the online procedure, as stated before (without deposit, it won’t be possible to conclude the procedure of request).

Merit requirements needed to benefit from reductions are established by the Legge di Bilancio 2017, and given below.

REQUIREMENTS TO BENEFIT FROM INITIATIVES FOR MOBILITY AND CULTURE

  • Full-time enrolment in the academic year 2018/2019
  • Enrolment by the normal duration of studies plus a year (till the 4th enrolment for bachelor’s degree, till the 3rd enrolment for master’s degree)
  • Students enrolled in the academic year 2018/2019: no requirements.
  • Students enrolled for the second time in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree: they should have got at least 10 UFC in the period from 10th August 2017 to 10th August 2018
  • Students enrolled for the third and fourth time in a degree course / enrolled for the third time in a Master’s degree course: they should have got at least 25 UFC in the period from 10th August 2017 and 10th August 2018.

Students taking part in the Percorso Giovani Talenti have to follow the same requirements and mode of request established by the initiatives for mobility and culture, in order to get a refund of travel tickets and museum tickets.

As concerns ToBike, reductions are only for students taking part in the Percorso Giovani Talenti.  The online request procedure will be available from half October 2018, after the acceptance of participation to the Percorso Giovani Talenti for the students who participate during the academic year 2018/2019 and for students who were part of it during the academic year 2017/2018 and have the requirement to still take part.

Tools of monitoring and intervention strategies which can reduce time of restoration of damaged infrastructures are now a priority for experts, institutions and economic system.

Wednesday 21st November 2018 – 9.00 am
Salone d’Onore del Castello del Valentino – Viale Mattioli, 39 – Torino

The collapse of the Morandi bridge in Geona, such as – barely a month after – the crashing of the viaduct in Calcutta (fortunately without victims), are just some of the examples that put on the spotlight the urgency of monitoring the resiliency of public infrastructures, subjected to the violence of unpredictable natural events, always more frequent.

Besides the consequences in terms of victims, the interruption of a transport net causes, in developed societies, a paralysis which has repercussions, in the long term, on the whole economic and productive system. It is crucial to improve the ability of intervention and restoration in the short term.

Besides the sharing of different experiences, the aim of this international seminar is to create a periodic forum, which can value and promote more efficient tools in the management of structural monitoring.

codice fiscale
A desk for foreign students

From today, September 3rd, to September 21st will be set up the temporary desk for the issue of the fiscal code to foreign students, who are arriving for the new academic year. Thanks to an agreement between the university and the Italian Agency of Revenue (Agenzia delle Entrate), also in 2018 newly enrolled foreign students will be able to integrate in Italy more easily.

In this way, in fact, foreign citizens who arrive in Turin for studying, teaching or research will be able to get the fiscal code straight in Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, at the enrolment office of the Politecnico di Torino, without going to the Italian Agency of Revenue. This is the second year the students have been given this opportunity, thanks to the good results of last year: in 2017, in fact, during 12 days in which the desk was open, 480 people used this service.

Getting a fiscal code is essential for a stay in Italy: not only is it the first step to enrol in university, but it is also useful for other practical aspects such as signing a rental contract, purchase of a SIM card for you telephone and much more.

The temporary desk will be open until 21st September 2018, from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
