The University of Turin is among the best universities in the world according to the Arwu (Academic Ranking of World Universities), the international ranking created by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and published in August 2022. UniTo is ranked fifth among the 46 Italian Universities, equally with the University of Bologna, the University of Naples Federico II and the Politecnico di Milano.

Worldwide the University of Turin is positioned between 201-300 among 2.500 universities, behind La Sapienza, the university of Rome (between 101-150 worldwide) and the Universities of Milan, Padua and Pisa (between 151-200). The
ranking system was created considering six indicators: graduates and professors with Nobel prizes or Fields Medal prizes; the most quoted researchers; articles on Nature or Science; number of publications on Web of Science; per capita performances.

In the new edition of the Subject Ranking of Shanghai in August 2022 UniTo has positioned between 51-75 in Food Science and Technology, between 76-100 in Agricultural Sciences, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, in Physics and in Veterinary Sciences. Other excellent positions were reached by Dentistry’Oral Sciences, Mathematics and Medical Technology, which are stable in the top 200.

The Politecnico di Torino has achieved an excellent result in the QS World University Rankings, one of the world’s most  famous international rankings published every year by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds. In fact, the Politecnico ranked in the top 25% of the best universities in the world, going from the top 25.7% to the top 22.9%, and thus consolidating the upward trend of the past few years.

The Politecnico moved up 9 positions in the world ranking, going from 334 th place to 325th. This result was achieved in spite of the fact that 124 new universities, which were not listed last year, entered the ranking for the first time. This ranking has highlighted, among other positives, the constant improvement of the Politecnico in the Citation per Faculty score, which is a measure of the quality of research being done at an institute. This score is based on the number of citations in scientific publications written by the researchers at a particular university. The Citation per Faculty score puts
the Politecnico in 236th place; this means that the university has moved up 23 places compared to last year.

The Politecnico also moved up 17 places in the ranking of foreign students, confirming its international appeal, and as far as the academic reputation is concerned, it moved up another

This morning at the Politecnico di Torino the first graduates in the "Climate Change" orientation of the master’s degree course in Environmental and Territorial Engineering were announced. The first one is Vittorio Giordano, former graduate of the first level at the Politecnico di Torino, who discussed
a thesis on the future prospects of the water footprint of crops in the African continent, with the support as supervisors of engineer Marta Tuninetti and Professor Francesco Laio, currently Director of the Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI) of the University.
The second one to be proclaimed is Yara Hammoud, a student from the Lebanese American
University, who discussed a thesis on the modeling of the role of the cryosphere in the definition of the
ground temperature in the Alpine area characterized by permafrost. Her supervisors were Professor
Jost von Hardenberg and two external supervisors from ARPA Piemonte, Dr. Christian Ronchi and Dr.
Luca Paro.

The master's degree course in Engineering for the Environment and the Territory of the
Politecnico di Torino trains future engineers able to address environmental challenges involving the
interaction between natural components (air, water, soil, biosphere) and humans and to develop
sustainable solutions for human activities. From the academic year 2019/2020, alongside the existing
orientations in Environmental Protection, Natural Hazards and Civil Protection and Geo-Engineering, a
new orientation dedicated to &Change" has been activated. The orientation, is entirely
offered in English, thus becoming the first engineering course in Europe dedicated to climate change,
with the aim of preparing a new generation of environmental engineers capable of responding to the
environmental and social challenges arising from climate change, and to seize the opportunities of the
future labor market.
"Improving the quantity and quality of agricultural production, ensuring sustainable adaptation to climate
change, is one of the major global challenges to facilitate the ecological transition – explains engineer
Marta Tuninetti with reference to Giordano's thesis. While, in relation to Hammoud's thesis,
Professor Jost von Hardenberg notes, "Permafrost degradation represents one of the most significant
impacts in the Alpine area of ongoing climate change, and numerical snowpack modeling represents a
fundamental tool for understanding the phenomenon and developing future scenario projections.

Friday, 23 October 2020 from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. in Palazzo Badini (via Verdi 10) and streamed live on Unito media (www.unito.it/media), takes place the
workshop “Promoting happiness and well-being: contexts and instruments”, organized by the Department of Psychology and by Movimento Mezzopieno
and aimed at students and citizens in general.

The workshop will deal with the theme of well-being and happiness starting from a scientific understanding of the constructs and presenting the results
achieved by science, in particular psychology, on this topic. The workshop is for 60 students from undergraduate and postgraduate UniTo faculties (Departments of Psychology; Culture, Politics and Society; Economy and Statistics; Neuroscience; Humanities; Medical Science; Public health science
and Paediatric Science).
The participants must register online (registration is compulsory), choosing whether to attend “in presence” or “remotely”; the morning's plenary sessions are streamed live on Unito media (www.unito.it/media) and are accessible by the citizens as well.

Culture and Tourism in the digital era: the challenge for university students from Politecnico and UniTo kicks off.

The 30 students that will participate in the challenge “Culture and Tourism in the digital era” issued by Contamination Lab of Turin with the collaboration of Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” will try to answer questions that are very relevant today, such as “How will the digital change the mechanism to valorise identities and artistic heritage? How will the world of exhibitions and history of artworks change? What changes will the actors of the sector undergo?”

The aim is to come to interesting conclusions that combine culture and technology, two fields that are extremely interconnected today and can enhance
the other’s strengths.
Students will come up with solutions to innovate exhibition modalities and restoration to valorise our city’s cultural heritage. They will start from understanding the various factors relative to a specific ecosystem, always keeping in mind the “new normalcy” we are living in that influences our relationship with our cultural heritage. Thus, the aim is to develop idea to answer to the digitalization of culture and its effects.

Research Centre for Women and Gender Studies (CIRSDe) recently published a new guide about Università di Torino programmes with a gender-based
perspective. It is an interesting a helpful tool for any UniTo student to approach and explore gender studies. In fact, it offers an overview on the active courses in the various Departments of Turin that have focused on a gender-based perspective.

There are few Gender Studies courses in Italian universities and we advise you visit CIRSDe website to find out more about Doctorates, master’s degrees or
advanced courses on this subject. In the past few years in Italy, the need to address not only issues related to the disparity between men and women but
also the LGBTQ+ community has arisen. We hope that in next year’s guide we will be able to put more Gender Studies courses, so that the academic world in Turin will be even more inclusive.
