Besides university : “Fantastic Teachers and Where to Find Them”

What do university teachers of the Università di Torino do when they aren’t teaching?

The curiosity to find out the life of teachers after lessons in classrooms or laboratories, with research, passions and ideas led FRidA – il Forum della Ricerca di Ateneo to come up with a new radio format “Fantastic Teachers and Where to Find Them”, anchored by Giulia Alice Fornaro and Fabiano Catania, in collaboration with Radio 110.

For the first time the passions of teachers besides professorship.

Stories of new projects, successes, challenges and difficulties, personally told by researchers of the Università degli Studi di Torino.

Two guests for the first episode of the new format

The first episode, recorded live at the Salone del Gusto-Terra Madre last 24th September, had two guests. Two “fantastic teachers” decided to take part in the program. The first one was Daniela Fargione, teacher of Anglo-american Literature. Since she found out she is coeliac she has become an expert of “environmental humanism”, because also literature and art can help in becoming aware of environmental problems. The second guest was Stefano Bechis, researcher at the Dipartimento Interateneo di Scienze del Territorio. He wanted to become a musician, but students protests against nuclear power led him to work with solar energy… in Africa!

Poster Competition of the Forum Ferdinando Rossi: “Mobilità sostenibile: innovazione tecnica” (Sustainable mobility: technical innovation)

On 15th and 16th November, at the Campus Luigi Einaudi in Turin, there will be the third Forum Ferdinando Rossi, on the topic of the sustainable mobility, called “Via di mezzo, mobilità sostenibile e territori“. (“Middle course, sustainable mobility and territories”)

Program of the event

The first day, on 15th November, is called “Best practices e prospettive future”(best practices and future perspectives) and there will be some academic meetings, which will examine the topic trough different fields: from ecology to public health, from economics to social sciences, from transport planning to technological innovation and this will allow an interdisciplinary approach.

The second day, on 16th November, is called “Politiche del territorio” (policies of the territory) and there will be a round-table conference, where will be present university students enrolled in Scuole di Studi Superiori or Collegi di merito and it will be coordinated by an expert of the topic.

The Poster Competition

At the event there will be a Poster Competition “Innovazione tecnica”, addressed to Piedmontese startups, PhD students, researchers and master’s student of Piedmontese universities.

With “sustainable mobility” we mean means of transport which reduce the environmental, social, physics and economical impact produced by means of transport. The subject is very topical and always more central. It is also highly interdisciplinary thanks to its relevance in different fields: from ecology to public health, from economics to mathematical models, from urban anthropology to social sciences, from transport planning to technological innovation.

Early in the afternoon of the second day, the winner will have the opportunity to present its work.

Where do our thoughts come from? New perspectives by quantum physics

How is the brain organized from the hierarchical point of view and how complex is its functioning? What is the link between the mind and the brain and where do our thoughts come from? Modern neurosciences propose a multi-line approach in order to answer these questions. This approach involves the molecular aspects, but also the psychological, psychiatric and pharmacological ones.

The Summer School “Brain and Gut Neuroscience: From Molecules to Mood”, organized by the Research Institute for Quantitative and Quantum Dynamics of Living Organisms – Center for Medicine, Mathematics & Philosophy Studies together with Bromatech, Politecnico di Torino, Società Italiana di Biologia Sperimentale, wants to present a complete vision of the human brain from both the hierarchical and the functional point of view.

The hypotheses of the cognitive neuroscience use theoretic suppositions of the physics of the XIX century. Specifically, the neural net models of the “emerging conscious experience” are based on analogies with the relationships between crystal molecules, fluids and gases and use chemical hypotheses about the appearance of thoughts, states of mind and perceptions starting from the chemical modulation of the synaptic interaction in neurons.

However, the science of the XX and XXI centuries offers probabilistic perspectives from where to study the link between the mind and the brain. The quantum mechanics and the quantum field theory gave the physicists more “degrees of freedom”.  Relatively new derivations of the quantum physics are the quantum information theory, the quantum cryptography and the quantum computing that, together with the so-called quantum biology, pave the way for new cognitive paradigm and a new psychological literature.

The study of these theories can offer new perspectives for the research on the genesis and the nature of mental illnesses.

The course will be given at the Politecnico, from 26th to 31st August  and 50 doctors from all over Italy and about 15 students of technical and physical subjects will come to Turin. They will be discussing this topic with 15 international speakers. Among them there will be Ted Dinan (Ireland), Gustav Bernroider (Austria), Paavo Pylkkanen (Finland), Mark Rasenick (Chicago, USA) and Italian lecturers Massimo Cocchi , Francesco Cappello, Giuseppe Vitiello and Alessandro Vercelli.

2018 Entrance exams: applicants and available places

July 24 marked the end date of the application for the entrance tests for Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture and Veterinary Medicine. Miur (Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research) has recently published a report on its website showing the number of applicants. Here’s some data: there are 83,127 overall applicants, of which 67,005 aspiring Medicine and Dentistry students (66,907 in 2017). There are 7.986 applicants for the Architecture exam, while there were 9,340 last year. There are 8,136 applicants for the Veterinary Medicine exam, slightly fewer than in 2017 (8,431). The number of applicants for the Medicine (fully taught in English) exams was 7,660, while in 2017  it was 7,021.

We can see the number of applicants for Medicine has increased, while it has decreased for Architecture. As for Veterinary Medicine, numbers remained constant.
The maximum number of available places has also increased:

  • 9,779 for Medicine (9,100 last year)
  • 1,096 for Dentistry (908 in 2017)
  • 759 for Veterinary Medicine (655 in 2017)
  • 7,211 for Architecture (6,873 in 2017)

As observed by the daily newspaper Sole24Ore, 1 out of 6 applicants will be admitted to Medicine and Dentistry, 1 out of 10 to Veterinary Medicine, while for Architecture the number of applications and of available places are almost the same: 7,986 applications and 7,211 available places. Compared to last year, there are better chances for aspiring architects, doctors and dentists, while it will be worse for aspiring veterinarians.

The exam dates are the following:

  • Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Prosthetic Dentistry – September 4;
  • Veterinary Medicine, September 5;
  • Architecture, September 6;
  • Health Care, September 12;
  • Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Prosthetic Dentistry (taught in English), September 13;
  • Primary Teacher Education, September 14;

Health Care (Master’s Degree), October 26.

UniTo: applications for international students

If you want to enrol at Università degli Studi di Torino and you have a foreign degree, you must submit an admission request online, through Apply@UniTo by the following dates:

  • first call: from February 1, to February 28, 2018 – Closed
  • second call: from March 15, to April 30, 2018 – Closed

For EU students and extra-EU students legally residing in Italy:

  • third call:  from May 15, to June 15, 2018 – Closed
  • fourth call: from July 10, to August 10, 2018 (for first- and second-level one-cycle degree programmes)
  • fifth call: from June 20, to July 10, 2018 (for second-level degree programmes).

The application must be filled in personally. Data and documents must correspond with the truth.

 

The application online procedure is compulsory if you want to enrol for first- and second-level programmes, as well as one-cycle programmes.
In case of a positive result of the procedure, all candidates who are extra-EU citizens applying for a visa will receive a letter of eligibility, written according to the D-model given by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR), to be presented at the Italian Embassy for the pre-enrolment procedure.
Results will be given to candidates in the following dates:

  • first call: April 16 – April 30, 2018
  • second call: June 18 – June 29, 2018
  • third call: July 23 – August 3, 2018
  • fourth call: September 1 – October 5, 2018
  • fifth call: October 1 – October 12, 2018

Home food: Genova dedicates rooms for lunch at the University

The University of Genoa introduces “home food”, lunch-rooms where students can heat up and eat   comfortably their homemade meals. “Siamo stanchi di mangiare in corridoio, di non trovare posto per studiare, di mangiare cibo freddo” (We’re tired of eating in the corridors, not finding a place to study, and eating cold food”) protested loudly, a few weeks ago, the Spazi-entiti of Turin, a group of students who, ant Luigi Einaudi Campus, denounced the lack of places to eat their homemade meals. While UniTo hasn’t lifted an finger, Genoa is an example to be followed.

The inconvenience of lunchtime is common. In Genoa as in Turin, students must organise their day at university, deciding what and where to eat, fitting in lunchtime between classes. So a few decide to take their food from home: cointainers and tupperwares. Then they begin looking for a place to eat their meal, unbdobtedly cold.

Paolo Comanducci, dean of Unige, has decided “di rispondere alle sempre crescenti richieste degli studenti” (“to answer the ever-growing requests from students”). Home food rooms are equipped with microwave ovens, tables and chairs, sinks for washing hands and free wi-fi. What about Turin? No concrete answer yet, but the University now has an excellent case in point to consider: the University of Genoa.

 

University of Turin: professors’ strike

The Movimento per la Dignità della Docenza Universitaria have announced a strike during the next summer exam session of 2017/2018 academic year, from June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018.

Professors who will take part in the strike will not administer the first programmed exams. The following exams of the summer session will take place regularly.

It will be possible to schedule extraordinary exams:

  • from the fourteenth day after the day of the strike, if there’s only one exam from June 1 to July 31, or if there are 5 or less chances per year of re-taking the exam set ofr the day of the strike
  • approximately 7 days after the day of the strike, for graduating students, Erasmus students, students with specific health issues or pregnant students.

We guarantee therefore at least one chance of taking every exam during the summer session.

Based on the principles of the right to strike, professors are not obliged to communicate their intention of striking beforehand.

Humanities in a day – A look into humanistic research

The University of Turin invites you to the first day dedicated to humanistic research: on Wednesday, June 13, from 9AM to 6PM, at Palazzo Nuovo (via Sant’Ottavio – 20, Turin) researchers will tell you about their projects through scientific posters, talks and guided tours in the research centres.

Start@UniTO Project: starting University on the right foot

Are you going to start taking a degree and want to enrol at the University of Turin?
Whatever the degree course you may be interested in, UniTo provides 20 free online courses you can take while attending school, even if you still aren’t a university student.

The Project was made by the Departments of the University of Turin, contributed by the Compagnia di San Paolo.

You will be able to study at your own pace, to train with self-assessment tests and take the exam as soon as you’ll be enrolled. Registering is easy and quick: connect to the Start@UniTO platform and choose the courses you’re interested in, log in with a click and your credentials and start your new studies.

Courses are from first-year subjects of almost all UniTo degree courses – from physics to social science, from information technology to cultural anthropology, from law to languages, from maths to zoology – specifically thought for those who have to start university. They’re readily accessible because they are on a dedicated multimedia platform.

You will find multimedia content you can access at your own pace and you will be able to put yourself to the test through self-assessment tests. Once you complete the course and pass the final test, you will get a certificate of attendance for your first university corse, and you will be able to take the exam as soon as you’ll be enrolled, and your first credits will be registered on your exam transcript.
