Polito: il nuovo master per esperti di reti in fibra ottica

Photonics for Data Networks and Metrology, this will be the name of the new, innovative master course at Turin Polytech.

5G, HD videos, contents of virtual and augmented reality, growth of cloud services, synchronisation of networks and Internet of things: all these technologies are becoming more and more important in our daily life. However, due to their massive use , they will lead in the years to come to a huge increase of the data traffic and of the demand for networks synchronisation. That’s why photonic networks have to be more and more widespread and elastic and to offer innovative services, in order to meet this growing demand.

For this reason, professionals able to deal with this transformation will play a fundamental role. The new II level Master course Photonics for Data Networks and Metrology of Turin Polytech has been specifically created for these professions of the future. It has been created in collaboration with INRiM and other 17 institutions, like companies, research centres and consortia: AGH, Clonets, Cisco, ISMB, Juniper Networks, LPL, MenloSystems, Oclaro, PSNC, Seven Solutions, SM Optics, Synopsys, Syrte, TIM, Telecom Infra Project, Top-IX, Ustav..

The fact that so many partners are involved in supporting the initiative proves that there is a need for a vertical and multidisciplinary knowledge about these new issues. The program is also supported by the EU through the project H2020-INFRAINNOV-CLONETS and will offer both theoretical and practical lessons as well as a final stage in a European company or research centre.

The aim of the Master is to provide multidisciplinary competences and knowledge about transmission and photonic networks but also about the principles of metrology and of distribution of time/frequency connection on telecommunication infrastructures based on optical fibre transmission. The program is intended for students having different backgrounds, from ICT graduates to physics and metrology graduates and will create hybrid professional figures that will be able to develop and administrate cutting-edge photonic networks, in order to support a growing traffic that will also require the distribution of time/frequency connections from and within metrology centres.

The Master is leaded by Professor Curri from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (Dipartimento di Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni ) of the Turin Polytech in collaboration with Doctor Calonico from INRiM and is a full-time program lasting an academic year that will start on September 2018 and finish in November 2019.

PoliTo scala le classifiche dei ranking

The path recorded in recent years by the Polytechnic of Turin in international rankings is a path that is constantly growing. The University is also among the best technical universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018, one of the most accredited international rankings, which highlights the areas of excellence in training and research. The ranking, which is already at the seventh edition, analyzes over 1100 universities and scientific institutions around the world: among these, the Polythecnic ranks 33rd university in the world for the macro-area Engineering & Technology.

An evident growth in the last three years: in 2016, in the Engineering & Technology area, the Polytechnic ranked 66th and the following year it registered already a significant improvement reaching the 52nd place; in 2018, then, a leap forward of almost twenty positions, up to the 33rd, which follows the excellent world ranking in the ranking, again of the QS agency, Graduate Employability Ranking of last September, which saw the Polytechnic at 1st place in the world for Graduate Employment Rate.

In the Ranking presented on 28th February  2018, the University confirms excellent placings in all its business secrtors, ranking among the “Top Universities” of the world in 10 subjects and 3 of the thematic areas (Engineering & Technology, Natural Sciences and Arts & Humanities) present in the QS World University ranking. The parameters taken into consideration concern the Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation, estimated through a statistical survey conducted by QS, the number of quotes present in scientific publications and some bibliometric indexes including the H-index. The performance of the Polytechnic of Turin has significantly improved in particular in the Employer Reputation, where the University earns 10 points, confirming the increased international consideration among companies and factories.

As for the individual areas, the Polytechnic improves its ranking in all three disciplines in which it is part of the Top 50 universities of the world: for Civil & Strucutural Engineering it ranks 34th in the world, gaining a position with respect to the last year; for Architecture / Built Environment moves to position 41 from the 46th in which it was in the 2017 ranking; finally, for Electrical Engineering it earns the 50th place, while in 2017 it was more than in the 50th position. Even in History of Art, a subject introduced in the ranking only this year, the Polytechnic obtained an excellent result, ranking 24th, thanks to its high performance in the Academic Reputation.

Good results also in Computer Science & Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Sciences, in which the University ranks among the 100 best Universities in the world; and in Art & Design, Chemical Engineering and Mathematics, which find the University ranked in the group of the best 150. The other discipline in which the University ranks among the 200 best Universities in the world is Physics & Astronomy.

“I am extremely satisfied with these results, which confirm how in recent years our University has consolidated and considerably increased its international reputation”, underlines dean Marco Gilli, who continues: “The fact that a serious agency as QS has one more time given such gratifying recognition to our Polytecnnic, after the excellent result on the employment status of the graduates who saw us first in the world, confirms that by now the quality of our research and training activities is recognized and appreciated in all our fields of activity , from Engineering, to Architecture and Design “.

Indagine AlmaLaurea 2018

Yesterday, 27th February 2018, the Administration Board of the Polytechnic has established the extension of the NO-TAX area, expanding the contributory bracket exempted from the payment of University fees. The decree will involve almost 4200 students, with a cost, by the Polytechnic, of more than one and a half million euros.

This measure has met the efforts of AlterPolis, the student representative list that brought this goal among the points of their electoral program. “The main suggestion on the topic of taxation was exactly the extension of the NO-TAX area”,  explain the students of AlterPolis, adding: “it is a political and social resolution of historical importance: with this measure more than 4 thousand students extra will be exempted from the payment of the fee to the Polytechnic”.

The Brackets  

The Isee brackets exempted from the payment will no longer be of 13500 euros but of 25500 euros. “The Administration Board today approved the proposal that gives a turning point compared to past trends” – explains Marco Rondina, member of the Cda for AlterPolis – “this is a one of a kind event in one of the European Countries where the highest University fees are registered”.

The political Debate

Yesterday, the topic of the right to education was also addressed in political terms: University students, in fact, organized a debate that involved the candidates in the upcoming elections. The debate on the problems and critical aspects of Italian Universities saw the positions of Forza Italia, Partito Democratico and Movimento 5 Stelle at odds with Liberi e Uguali and Potere al Popolo. The first ones have focused of issues such as meritocracy and utility and necessity of supporting school-work alternation system; while the second ones have underlined the risk of creating new generations of unpaid workers. 

 

 

"M'illumino di meno", le iniziative del Politecnico

This year the Polytechnic of Turin will participate again at “M’illumino di meno”, the initiative of the broadcast of Radio Rai “Caterpillar” to promote the energy saving and the virtuous behaviours in the field of environmental sustainability, that has already reached the 14th edition.

The two scheduled meetings are part of the actions promoted by the Green Team of the Polytechnic of Turin an organization born at the Polytechnic to promote activities of promotion of virtuous behaviours by the point of view of sustainability and to take a shared path of validation of the institute as a sustainable campus.

Today, Thursday 22nd February, at 7 pm

“Caccia al kWh” in Italian Universities

On 22nd February the Green Team of the Polytechnic of Turin will promote the “Caccia al kWh”, a flash mob during which students and staff will turn off the lights after the time of use in the rooms of the headquarter of the University, but they will also close windows and doors that entail a waste of electricity or heat energy for heating: a symbolic act to show the right use of energy. The results of the campaign will be monitored live in the Living LAB, by measuring the reduction of energy consumption of the University. The event will end with a refreshment by candlelight for all the participants.

This year the initiatives of “M’illumino di meno” are promoted in the field of the Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (RUS), that gathers together 55 Italian Universities. On 22nd February from 6pm to 9pm, the “Caccia al kWh” will take place simultaneously in different universities, in order to involve a bigger audience for the actions of research on the waste of energy in the headquarters of the universities. The main goal is to sensitise people of the universities towards an individual contribution that everyone of us can offer on the topic of energy-saving, becoming with little inattentions, that all together can have a significant impact on the energy consumption of the universities.

M’illumino con meno. Un anno dopo” seminar

On 23rd February the Green Team organizes the event “M’illumino con meno. Un anno dopo”, focused on the topic of energy efficiency in the lighting. A year ago, on the occasion of the “M’Illumino di meno 2017”, the Polytechnic had started an experimentation on the use of intelligent LED lighting with the involvement of some professionals of the sector. The conference will be the perfect opportunity to present the results of the campaigns carried out in the Living LAB, before and after the replacement operation. The data show significant savings, by highlighting the effect achieved with the addition of occupancy and light sensors. The experimentation carried out in some rooms of the headquarter (some offices, a hallway and a technical room) will give some useful information for the planning of more extended interventions in universities. The issue is topical for the Public Administration, also in relation to the offered possibilities of the current incentives.

Castello di Valentino

The Castello del Valentino is one of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997. It is now 20 years that the castle is at  the heart of a enhancement project of the Politecnico di Torino, that aims to restore it not only for the academic community but also for the whole city.

The meeting will take place today, Wednesday, 7th February, at 2.30 pm, and it represents a moment of reflection on the steps already taken and on what remains to be done. The actors involved in the enhancement project in the last few decades will be involved.

Furthermore, the restoration project of the Cappella of the Castello del Valentino will be presented.

The procedure for the test registration, that at the moment allows only the enrolment, will be available from mid-February approximately. For the registration you have to login to Apply Polito.

The first registration is necessay to:

  • enroll in the admission test (please consult the webpage Iscrizione al primo anno to have all the necessary information);
  • have acces to all the general information related to the courses;
  •  find educational material and practice tests;
  • consult the FAQ and the updates about the procedures to follow to become a student at the Politecnico of Turin.

After almost a year of waiting, Archeo-Physics researchers at the Polytechnic University of Turin have finally obtained the green light from Egypt for the decisive geo-radar measurements from inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun (code number: KV62) in the Valley of the Kings a Luxor. The measurements will be conducted between January 31 and February 6, 2018 with the objective of verifying the presence of empty spaces and/or corridors hidden behind the walls of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber. According to a theory proposed by the English Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, the KV62 tomb could be, in fact, part of a larger tomb belonging perhaps to Queen Nefertiti.

According to Professor Franco Porcelli, main investigator of the research group coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Turin, three different last-generation radar systems will be employed for this research. In this way, the possible existence of hidden structures of relevance archaeological site adjacent to the tomb of Tutankhamun can be established with a 99% degree of confidence. One of the tasks will be to cross-check the geo-radar measurements with data obtained last May using a different non-invasive technique, based on the three-dimensional mapping of the electrical resistivity of the subsoil around Tutankhamun’s tomb. The May data suggested the presence of suspicious cavities in the rock a few meters away from KV62. The geo-radar measurements from the inside of KV62 will help understand whether these suspicious cavities are indeed real and directly connected with KV62.

For this research, a team of experts has been put together, belonging to two departments of the Politecnico di Torino (the Department of Applied Science and Technology and the Department of Environmental, Territory and Infrastructure Engineering), in collaboration with a professor from the University of Turin (Department of Earth Sciences) and two private companies, 3DGeoimaging of Turin and Geostudi Astier of Livorno. Terravision, a British company, is also involved in the research, as well as the Egyptian Archaeological Center in Cairo in the role of Egyptological consultancy. The project also enjoys the collaboration of experts from the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities under the guidance of former Minister Mamdouh Eldamaty. The research project, supported by the Turin Polytechnic, is sponsored by the Novara Sviluppo Foundation, Geostudi Astier and National Geographic.

 

On Thursday, 11 January, the finale of the Zero Robotics came to an end. It is a contest that brought to the Polytechnic of Turin more than 150 students of high schools from eight different European Countries: Italy, Russia Federation, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, Rumania, Great Britain.

One of the two winning teams of this edition, BeachPin1701, is entirely Italian, it is composed of students from ITIS “Pininfarina” of Moncalieri (To), ITIS “Galileo Galilei” of Livorno and “Leonardo da Vinci” High School of Treviso. The team won the first place together with the American team Naughty Prions and Lions.

The students of the High School “Cecioni” of Livorno and the High School “Agnelli” of Turin were also awarded. They won the Virtual Final, the finale of the second category of the championship.

The competition, born in 2009 in the Space System Laboratory of the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology di Boston (MIT), this year involved almost 70 European Institutes, 100 American Institutes and 50 Australian Institutes, for a total of almost 2000 students.

The finalist students could attend live the last part of the competition that took place on the International Space Station and in video conference with the MIT of Boston and the University of Sydney, where all the students from America and Australia got together to watch the finale.

The finalists competed in the programming of SPHERES (Synchronised Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites), space robots of the size of a bowling ball, already used by NASA inside of the Space Station to test instruction cycles, to carry out autonomous rendezvous and docking operations. These machines are also experimentally used for the maintenance and assembly of satellites and for formation flight.

Every team is composed of 5 to 10 students and is coordinated by a teacher of the school, that is a programming expert.

Every year the teams have a mission. This year the students had to deal with the research of primordial life forms (bacteria) on the Encadalus moon of Saturn, drilling samples to bring them to Earth.

At the end of the first phase, the teams were allowed to ally and work together to achieve a more efficient program. The next phase consists of preliminary elimination competition, that only 42 teams passed; the programs of these teams have been directly uploaded for the finale on the robotic spheres present on the Space Station, where the programs of the winning teams have been carried out under the supervision of astronauts.

From 25 to 29 September the Polytechnic of Turin will host the “Open Education Training Week”, the week of training proposed in the field of the international project Erasmus + “OpenMed – Opening up Education in South-Mediterranean countries” coordinated by the Unione delle Università del Mediterraneo – UNIMED. Five European partners and nine University institutes from four different countries of the Southern Mediterranean are committed to the project, intended to stimulate and promote what are known as Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP), which are resources and open educational practices, teaching material in digital format made available with licenses enabling them to be reused, modified and distributed. The aim is to offer a growth opportunity to the higher education sector thanks to the sharing of knowledge and teaching tools in partner countries: Morocco, Palestine, Egypt and Jordan.

The week of meetings at the Polytechnic of Turin – partner of the project – will be focused on fundamentals and approaches to the “open” education. Educators, researches, teachers and students in training or just people that are interested in the subject can attend the meetings. Introductory classes, illustrations of basic principles and group works will provide information and will anticipate the second part of the training journey, which will be completed online in the coming months. In addition to the partner institutions of the project, eight more universities from Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Lebanon, for a total of 80 people and 8 countries (3 EU countries and 5 countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean), will take part in the meetings of the week.

The Open Education Training Week represents the first stage of the “Open Education: fundamentals and approaches. A learning journey opening up Teaching in Higher Education” course. At the end of the week, the online stage of the course will begin, during which participants will be able to access the online teaching modules and develop their own project idea of Open Education.

The aim of the project OpenMed is to analyze the good practices with regard to the open education that have already been implemented in the Mediterranean region and to increase the adoption of these models in higher education, also through courses and workshops meant for trainers, like the one that will take place in Turin. The ultimate goal of the project is to protect education as a public good and fundamental human right and promote the role of universities as knowledge centers not only towards student but also beyond institutional limits, especially towards the weaker and disadvantaged groups of the society, such as low-income households, students with disabilities, inhabitants of rural areas and refugees.

The 2nd level Master of “Energy efficiency and sustainability in the industry” aims to train professionals who are able to manage efficiently the energy. It is aimed at recent graduates in Engineering or in other academic technical-scientific disciplines and managers.

15 out of 80 applications were successful. The students selected come from Politecnico di Torino, Università La Sapienza di Roma e from the Universities of Bologna, Padova, Parma and of Calabria region, 14 of them will be awarded a scolarship.

The way in which we produce, provide and consume energy, affects the success of a company. For this reason, it is fundamental to train professionals who are able to use energy resources in an efficient way.

This 1-year Master, which consists of 500 lecture hours and 250 hours dedicated to an internship, will deal with all the technical, planning, management, price-related and normative aspects that the professionals of the Energy Management must be acquainted with, both from an efficient and sustainable point of view, together with a knowledge in the reduction of carbon-dioxide emissions.
