Indagine AlmaLaurea 2018

Last Monday, June 11, 2018, the AlmaLaurea 2018 report on the Profile and the Employment Status of Graduates was presented in Turin. Of all graduates involved, there were 6,597 from the Politecnico, of which 3,412 first-level and 3,185 second-level graduates.

The profile of the interviewed graduates confirms the high percentage of international students: 9,1% of first-level graduates (compared to 3,1% in Italy) and 13, 4% of second-level graduates (compared to 4,6% in Italy). The outcome on university experience was significant: 9 out of 10 graduates stated they are satisfied with their general university experience.

For PoliTo’s students, entering the job market already begins during university years. 46,4% of graduates has done an internship recognized by their university: 42,2% of fisrt-level graduates and 51,0% of second-level graduates (considering those who did it only during the first three years, the percentage goes up to 69,8%).

As for the employment profile, the study shows that the majority of these young people continue studying after their Bachelor’s degree course, therefore postponing their entrance to the job market after their Master’s degree course. Among first-level graduates who have never applied for a Master’s degree, therefore they started to work, the employment rate is 76,7%, compared to 71,1% nation-wide.

The most significant datum concerns second-level graduates one year after graduation: 86,4% of second-level graduates of the Politecnico is employed. This percentage is far higher than the average in Italy, 73,9%, and it is increasing compared to last year’s percentage, 83,7%. This confirms the upward trend registered by the Graduate Employability Rankings 2018 as well, made by the British institute QS by calculating the relation between the employment percentage of graduates and the average of Italian universities analysed in the ranking. The Institute certifies that the Politecnico di Torino is the first university in the world which guarantees job opportunities to its graduates.

Latest data from Almalaurea show that the percentage of employed people still increases five years after graduation, reaching 95,3%.

The wage difference between second-level graduates of the Politecnico and the Italian average is significant:  1,429 euros net per month compared to an average wage of  1,153 euros a year after graduation, and 1,741 euros compared to 1,428 euros five years after graduation.

“Th data presented today by Almalaurea confirm an upward trend which has become fundamental for our university. It’s a good sign, for students and their families, who in always larger numbers choose the Politecnico also for its job opportunities. We want to keep offering these opportunities in the future years as well, thanks to the organization of courses with a focus on diverse knowledge, teamwork and a cross-curricular challenge. This will be possible thanks to a more consistent use of innovative teaching methods, with more fieldwork, in order to create more impact on the society and increasing critical skills necessary to train future engineers, architects, designers and planners”, commented the dean Guido Saracco.

ESCP Europe

ESCP Europe together with Tsinghua University
for an international Bachelor’s degree between Europe and China

Starting from the 2018-2019 academic year
students of Bachelor in Management (BSc) will be able to study in Cina

During the three-year course students are required to change campuses once a year, in order to know the reality and the culture of three different countries. Each student will choose a different campus each year, during three years:

  • First year: London, Paris or Beijing (at Tsinghua University)
  • Second year: Madrid, Paris or Turin
  • Third year: Berlin or Paris

Three years after its launch on an international university level, the Bachelor in Management (BSc) – Bachelor’s degree programme of the ESCP Europe business school – widens its horizon thanks to the partnership with Tsinghua University of Beijing, one of the best universities in the world.

The three-year course will be held in three different countries: other than in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris and Turin, young aspiring managers will have the opportunity to study at the new academic partner, in China. Students may choose to begin in September 2018 at Tsinghua University and study for the following years in the other European branches of the business school. Courses will be the same as for first-year students in ESCP EurOpe campuses, but contextualised to the Asian market.

The Bachelor in Management is an exciting, original and engaging programme which combines different subjects: the classics of management, such as marketing and finances, with humanities, among which psychology and sociology, language and self-development courses. Moreover, it includes internships and social projects, allowing students to acquire complete multidisciplinary knowledge. The goal is to create a bridge between university and the job market, preparing students for an international career in the current extremely diverse economic sector, encouraging them to trace a new world map.

First-year lessons, including in China, are held in English, as are the lessons of the second year in Turin. While it is possible to choose between English and the local language in the following years in the campuses of London, Madrid, Paris and Berlin. The partnership will also allow students from Asia to obtain an European Bachelor in Management (BSc).

“As an European business school, we have chosen to develop a programme between China and Europe which is perfectly aligned with our international strategy and with our goal of training future leaders – explains Léon Laulusa, Executive Vice-President e Dean for academic affairs and international relations of ESCP Europe“Even though it is the world’s second economic power, China isn’t well-known in the Western world. Not everyone knows, for example, that in 2017 among the 500 biggest companies in the world in terms of turnover, there were 109 Chinese companies. Or that the 40 biggest Chinese companies yield over 17 trillion euros, exceeding the GDP of the whole European Union”.

“Chinese economy is still unexplored and offers thousands of opportunities, so it must be analysed closely – explains Prof. Francesco Rattalino, Director of ESCP Europe Turin Campus -. This Bachelor’s degree course meets the needs of young people who want to obtain a qualification as fast as possible, in order to have the best tools to face the job market in the most efficient and competitive way. ESCP Europe wanted to accelerate the development of the programme, answering the growing demand of studying in China made by students with a strong international inclination. Tsinghua University e ESCP Europe aim to the same level of excellence, welcoming students from the best high schools”.

“One of the greatest advantages of this study programme in China is the possibility of interaction for students from all over the world – maintains Margot Drancourt De Lasteyrie, Director of China Projects in the International Affairs Department di ESCP Europe -. Twenty years ago, I had the privilege of studying in Shanghai, but at that time international and Chinese students didn’t have the chance to attend lessons together. What better way to know a country that having local friends? The possibility of studying in China for a year further improves the internationalization of students and the international opportunities for their career”.

Since its launch, the Bachelor in Management has attracted considerable interest internationally: 286 students are currently enrolled, coming from 54 countries, 5% of them from China.

Applications for next year are still open. The deadline id July 10, 2018.

What is ESCP Europe?

Established in Paris in 1819 as the world’s first Business School, ESCP Europe is one of the most renowned schools internationally and always comes first in rankings of Business Schools. It has 6 campuses in Europe – Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Turin and Warsaw – and trains students to an international career in management. In Europe, about 4.600 students and 5.000 managers, coming from 100 different countries, enrol every year. ESCP Europe offers complete programmes of General Management and Masters. The alumni community has 50,000 members of 200 different nationalities, and is active in 150 countries. Its Turin branch is open since 2004, thanks to the support of the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, the Camera di Commercio di Torino, the University of Turin, the Politecnico di Torino and many partner companies.

A few numbers…

Currently, there are 400 Chinese students in ESCP Europe, 600 are expected in the years to come. While in the past years there were:

  • 34 students in 2017 – 2018
  • 23 students in 2016 – 2017
  • 23 students in 2015 – 2016

250 to 300 students from ESCP Europe go to China every year to study (semesters during Master’s degree or Double-degree programmes) or for internships.

home food

The University of Genoa introduces “home food”, lunch-rooms where students can heat up and eat   comfortably their homemade meals. “Siamo stanchi di mangiare in corridoio, di non trovare posto per studiare, di mangiare cibo freddo” (We’re tired of eating in the corridors, not finding a place to study, and eating cold food”) protested loudly, a few weeks ago, the Spazi-entiti of Turin, a group of students who, ant Luigi Einaudi Campus, denounced the lack of places to eat their homemade meals. While UniTo hasn’t lifted an finger, Genoa is an example to be followed.

The inconvenience of lunchtime is common. In Genoa as in Turin, students must organise their day at university, deciding what and where to eat, fitting in lunchtime between classes. So a few decide to take their food from home: cointainers and tupperwares. Then they begin looking for a place to eat their meal, unbdobtedly cold.

Paolo Comanducci, dean of Unige, has decided “di rispondere alle sempre crescenti richieste degli studenti” (“to answer the ever-growing requests from students”). Home food rooms are equipped with microwave ovens, tables and chairs, sinks for washing hands and free wi-fi. What about Turin? No concrete answer yet, but the University now has an excellent case in point to consider: the University of Genoa.

Sciopero docenti UniTo

The Movimento per la Dignità della Docenza Universitaria have announced a strike during the next summer exam session of 2017/2018 academic year, from June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018.

Professors who will take part in the strike will not administer the first programmed exams. The following exams of the summer session will take place regularly.

It will be possible to schedule extraordinary exams:

  • from the fourteenth day after the day of the strike, if there’s only one exam from June 1 to July 31, or if there are 5 or less chances per year of re-taking the exam set ofr the day of the strike
  • approximately 7 days after the day of the strike, for graduating students, Erasmus students, students with specific health issues or pregnant students.

We guarantee therefore at least one chance of taking every exam during the summer session.

Based on the principles of the right to strike, professors are not obliged to communicate their intention of striking beforehand.

For further information, visit the Movimento per la Dignità della Docenza Universitaria website, on Sciopero giugno-luglio 2018 (2018 June-July strike) page. At the end of the page you will find in-depth documents, for Professors and Researchers taking part in the strike, with important clarifications for students as well.

In particular:

  • Integrazione indicazioni per sciopero 24-5-2018.pdf, is a document structured in questions and answers, providing precise and operational information on the striking method of professors and researchers (e.g. how a possible extraordinary exam will take place and how to schedule one; rules for students who have the urgency of taking the exam)
  • Indicazioni dettagliate per lo sciopero 8-5-2018.pdf, is the initial document, where you can find information about the reasons for the strike and basic instructions on how a strike works.

UniTo is completely available to help minimize the inconvenience for students.

Updates will be posted on unito.it, in the “News” section of the homepage.

Enjoy-the-Difference

WHAT IS “ENJOY THE DIFFERENCE” (ETD)?

ENJOY THE DIFFERENCE is a project which started in 2011 from the collaboration between a group of students and professors of the University of Turin, Comune di Torino – Servizio Passpartout and some organizations.

The primary aim of ETD is combining students’ need to find accommodation at a reasonable price with the need of promoting independent life for disabled people, through providing accommodation and improving the social network. The people involved, university students and young people with motor or sensory disabilities, will be housemates on equal terms for a year, during which there won’t be any specific schedule to stick to. The project is for students of the University of Turin and for young disabled people, forming mixed groups of housemates.

WHY “ENJOY THE DIFFERENCE”?

The challenge is to show difference as an opportunity:

  • Because each person has the right at an independent life based on equality, as it is stated in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Because acknowledging differences must be a starting point, where everyone can find opportunities for improvement.
  • In order to grow, to have new experiences, to put oneself to the test while meeting and getting to know other people.

ETD wants to promote a change of perspective: students and disabled young people together to overcome stereotypes and clichés. Disabled young people wanting to have fun and live their life instead of suffering because of their limitations, and students with a sense of responsibility, ideas for the future and the ability to invent new ways of participating, instead of listless and passive people who drag themselves from one classroom to the next.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

All university students and young people with motor or sensory disabilities who are looking for accommodation can apply to become future housemates!
It’s easy, just fill in the form online here: https://www.centrostudidivi.unito.it/progetti/etd
