PoliTo: extension of the NO-TAX area for the academic year 2018/2019

Yesterday, 27th February 2018, the Administration Board of the Polytechnic has established the extension of the NO-TAX area, expanding the contributory bracket exempted from the payment of University fees. The decree will involve almost 4200 students, with a cost, by the Polytechnic, of more than one and a half million euros.

This measure has met the efforts of AlterPolis, the student representative list that brought this goal among the points of their electoral program. “The main suggestion on the topic of taxation was exactly the extension of the NO-TAX area”,  explain the students of AlterPolis, adding: “it is a political and social resolution of historical importance: with this measure more than 4 thousand students extra will be exempted from the payment of the fee to the Polytechnic”.

The Brackets  

The Isee brackets exempted from the payment will no longer be of 13500 euros but of 25500 euros. “The Administration Board today approved the proposal that gives a turning point compared to past trends” – explains Marco Rondina, member of the Cda for AlterPolis – “this is a one of a kind event in one of the European Countries where the highest University fees are registered”.

The political Debate

Yesterday, the topic of the right to education was also addressed in political terms: University students, in fact, organized a debate that involved the candidates in the upcoming elections. The debate on the problems and critical aspects of Italian Universities saw the positions of Forza Italia, Partito Democratico and Movimento 5 Stelle at odds with Liberi e Uguali and Potere al Popolo. The first ones have focused of issues such as meritocracy and utility and necessity of supporting school-work alternation system; while the second ones have underlined the risk of creating new generations of unpaid workers.

To do this you have to access your MyUniTo page and to click on “Compilation of the career plan” in the “Career” menu

Until 28th February 2018 you can make online:

    • the choice of employment (full time/part time)
    • the presentation of the career plan

From 16th April to 18th May 2018 only the career plan can be modified; while the choice of employment can’t be changed anymore.

You can also control your university career with Myscenario

UniTo offers its students the Myscenario service, in order to easily see your study plan and be constantly updated about your exam situation. Thanks to an intuitive graphical representation, Myscenario allows you to:

  • verify the educational activities included in the study plan in the years foreseen by the degree course;
  • see the possible alternatives to the choices that can still be modified;
  • see the all the exams taken with its code, date of the appeal, grade and course credits obtained.

“M’illumino di meno”: the initiatives of the Polytechnic of Turin

This year the Polytechnic of Turin will participate again at “M’illumino di meno”, the initiative of the broadcast of Radio Rai “Caterpillar” to promote the energy saving and the virtuous behaviours in the field of environmental sustainability, that has already reached the 14th edition.

The two scheduled meetings are part of the actions promoted by the Green Team of the Polytechnic of Turin an organization born at the Polytechnic to promote activities of promotion of virtuous behaviours by the point of view of sustainability and to take a shared path of validation of the institute as a sustainable campus.

The following two are the initiatives promoted by the Polytechnic:

Today, Thursday 22nd February, at 7 pm

“Caccia al kWh” in Italian Universities

On 22nd February the Green Team of the Polytechnic of Turin will promote the “Caccia al kWh”, a flash mob during which students and staff will turn off the lights after the time of use in the rooms of the headquarter of the University, but they will also close windows and doors that entail a waste of electricity or heat energy for heating: a symbolic act to show the right use of energy. The results of the campaign will be monitored live in the Living LAB, by measuring the reduction of energy consumption of the University. The event will end with a refreshment by candlelight for all the participants.

This year the initiatives of “M’illumino di meno” are promoted in the field of the Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (RUS), that gathers together 55 Italian Universities. On 22nd February from 6pm to 9pm, the “Caccia al kWh” will take place simultaneously in different universities, in order to involve a bigger audience for the actions of research on the waste of energy in the headquarters of the universities. The main goal is to sensitise people of the universities towards an individual contribution that everyone of us can offer on the topic of energy-saving, becoming with little inattentions, that all together can have a significant impact on the energy consumption of the universities.

7 pm: gathering in the courtyard of the Rectorship

After that: formation of groups and campaign of light out and reduction of energy waste

At the end: refreshment by candlelight for all the participants in the atrium of the Sala Consiglio di Facoltà.

“M’illumino con meno. Un anno dopo” seminar

On 23rd February the Green Team organizes the event “M’illumino con meno. Un anno dopo”, focused on the topic of energy efficiency in the lighting. A year ago, on the occasion of the “M’Illumino di meno 2017”, the Polytechnic had started an experimentation on the use of intelligent LED lighting with the involvement of some professionals of the sector. The conference will be the perfect opportunity to present the results of the campaigns carried out in the Living LAB, before and after the replacement operation. The data show significant savings, by highlighting the effect achieved with the addition of occupancy and light sensors. The experimentation carried out in some rooms of the headquarter (some offices, a hallway and a technical room) will give some useful information for the planning of more extended interventions in universities. The issue is topical for the Public Administration, also in relation to the offered possibilities of the current incentives.

Open Day at the European Institure of Design of Turin

The first edition of the Orientation Days 2018, will take place from Monday 19th February to Friday 23rd February at Campus Luigi Einaudi (CLE) , in Lungo Dora Siena 100/A – Turin.

The event foresees the presentation of the academic offerings. The meetings will have a free entrance without reservation. During the entire duration of the meetings students will also be able to visit the stands of the Schools and of some student services.

From Turin to Luxor: a team of the Politecnico in the tomb of Tutankhamun

After almost a year of waiting, Archeo-Physics researchers at the Polytechnic University of Turin have finally obtained the green light from Egypt for the decisive geo-radar measurements from inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun (code number: KV62) in the Valley of the Kings a Luxor. The measurements will be conducted between January 31 and February 6, 2018 with the objective of verifying the presence of empty spaces and/or corridors hidden behind the walls of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber. According to a theory proposed by the English Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, the KV62 tomb could be, in fact, part of a larger tomb belonging perhaps to Queen Nefertiti.

According to Professor Franco Porcelli, main investigator of the research group coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Turin, three different last-generation radar systems will be employed for this research. In this way, the possible existence of hidden structures of relevance archaeological site adjacent to the tomb of Tutankhamun can be established with a 99% degree of confidence. One of the tasks will be to cross-check the geo-radar measurements with data obtained last May using a different non-invasive technique, based on the three-dimensional mapping of the electrical resistivity of the subsoil around Tutankhamun’s tomb. The May data suggested the presence of suspicious cavities in the rock a few meters away from KV62. The geo-radar measurements from the inside of KV62 will help understand whether these suspicious cavities are indeed real and directly connected with KV62.

For this research, a team of experts has been put together, belonging to two departments of the Politecnico di Torino (the Department of Applied Science and Technology and the Department of Environmental, Territory and Infrastructure Engineering), in collaboration with a professor from the University of Turin (Department of Earth Sciences) and two private companies, 3DGeoimaging of Turin and Geostudi Astier of Livorno. Terravision, a British company, is also involved in the research, as well as the Egyptian Archaeological Center in Cairo in the role of Egyptological consultancy. The project also enjoys the collaboration of experts from the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities under the guidance of former Minister Mamdouh Eldamaty. The research project, supported by the Turin Polytechnic, is sponsored by the Novara Sviluppo Foundation, Geostudi Astier and National Geographic.

 

The Red Codex from Rossano, restoration and conservation at Accademia delle Scienze

The series of meetings dedicated by Accademia delle Scienze to the themes of valorisation, restoration and conservation of Cultural Heritage reaches its second appointment: this will be the occasion to present the restoration work carried out on the Codex Purpureus of Rossano Calabro, a precious and particular red codex, recognized as a World Heritage Site and included by Unesco among the 47 new documents of the International Memory of the World Register.

The Codex,  kept in the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Rossano Calabro, is the surviving part of a Greek-Eastern Tetraevangel of great value, dated back to the sixth century A.D. It consists of 188 sheets written in silver and gold ink on purple dyed parchment. The now incomplete codex contains the text of the Gospel of Matthew and the majority of the Gospel of Mark, preceded by 13 illuminated pages with some significant moments of Jesus Christ’s life.

The Central Institute for Restoration and Conservation of Archives and Libraries proceeded to conduct a long and complex restoration, in order to analyze the codex with sophisticated techniques and to clarify its history and context of origin.

The conference will take place on Monday 22nd January in the Sala dei Mappamondi at Accademia delle Scienze, in Via Accademia delle Scienze 6, Turin. 4.00 p. m.

Stumbling Stones: the memory that enters into everyday life

The Stumbling Stones (Stolpersteine) are a widespread and participated monument designed and created by the german artist Gunter Demnig, whose ambitious goal is to remember every single deported into the lagers.
To keep alive the memory of the victims of nazi-fascism, the artist produces small brass plates placed on cubes of the size of the classic porphyry of road pavements, then set in the pavement in front of the last house freely chosen by the victim, or the place where the victim worked or studied.
The commemorative stones are reminiscent of the name, date and place of birth and the death or disappearance of the victims. These informations intende to give back individuality to those lives that during the war were reduced to only a number.
The stumbling block, therefore, metaphorically represents the invitation to reflection for those who, walking through the streets of the city, accidentally come across the history and the destinies of people who could have been our acquaintances. So the memory of what has been effectively enters into the streets that we frequent, in everyday life.

Stolpersteine is the “greatest” decentralized monument in the world. The initiative started in Cologne in 1995 and has led to the installation of more than 56 000 stones in various European countries.
These include Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, France and the Czech Republic,
Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Russia.
In Italy, in addition to Turin, there are in many cities including Rome, Viterbo, Siena, Reggio Emilia, Meina, Padua, Venice, Livorno, Prato, Ravenna, Brescia, Genoa, L’ Aquila, Bolzano, Ostuni, Chieti, Casale Monferrato, Teramo.
The installation is activated by individual citizens, associations or institutions that can request a specific stumbling block.

In Turin recently, on January 18th, eight other stumbling stones were laid, in addition to the 85 already present in the city.

Stumbling Stones Torino has been promoted by the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza, della Deportazione, della Guerra, dei Diritti e della Libertà, by the Jewish Community of Turin, by the Goethe-Institut Turin and by the Associazione Nazionale Ex Deportati (ANED) – sezione Torino, in collaboration with the Istituto Piemonte per la storia della Resistenza e della società contemporanea “Giorgio Agosti” (ISTORETO).

News from IED: the School of Fashion has been renewed and the Mobility-Lab inaugurated

New headquarters for the Fashion School

IED Torino recently inaugurated the new spaces for the Fashion School in a dedicated venue (Corso Matteotti, 11 – Turin).

The Academic Courses in Fashion Design and Jewelry and Accessories Design have been renewed with a focus on distinctive content and research areas.

The new cultural orientation today follows a path whose focus is research and innovation on materials and fabrics of the latest generation. The spaces, in addition to the new classrooms for front lectures, also include a tailoring workshop, fabric library and Cintiq classroom with 25 Dell Alienware and Wacom Cintiq 22HD workstations equipped with the latest generation software for Clo3D fashion design, useful in simulation and three-dimensional modeling.

The inaugurated spaces are IED Torino’s response to a growing need for the headquarters to have more and more avant-garde laboratories equipped to support collaborations with the most innovative companies in this sector.

IED Mobility-Lab

IED inaugurates in Turin IED mobility lab – a laboratory for innovation and development on the mobility of the future. The objective of the participatory research laboratory is to investigate the role of design in relation to different themes, such as the movement of people and things and the relationship between transport systems and cities.

At the head of IED mobility lab Luca Borgogno, Design Manager Pininfarina, an ex-student who has been working for years with the headquarters and whose professional experience, developed over twenty years of activity culminating in Pininfarina and Lamborghini, has always focused on research activities on the mobility of the future.

With the start of the IED mobility lab activities, the Turin office confirms for the 15th year the participation at the next International Motor Show in Geneva, presenting the latest concept car created by the historic Master in Transportation Design in collaboration with the European Design Center Hyundai.

The concept is also the result of the project participation initiated by the headquarters with a selection of leading international companies: Sila Group, project partner, Sabelt and Protocube Reply, technical partners.
