Where do our thoughts come from? New perspectives by quantum physics

How is the brain organized from the hierarchical point of view and how complex is its functioning? What is the link between the mind and the brain and where do our thoughts come from? Modern neurosciences propose a multi-line approach in order to answer these questions. This approach involves the molecular aspects, but also the psychological, psychiatric and pharmacological ones.

The Summer School “Brain and Gut Neuroscience: From Molecules to Mood”, organized by the Research Institute for Quantitative and Quantum Dynamics of Living Organisms – Center for Medicine, Mathematics & Philosophy Studies together with Bromatech, Politecnico di Torino, Società Italiana di Biologia Sperimentale, wants to present a complete vision of the human brain from both the hierarchical and the functional point of view.

The hypotheses of the cognitive neuroscience use theoretic suppositions of the physics of the XIX century. Specifically, the neural net models of the “emerging conscious experience” are based on analogies with the relationships between crystal molecules, fluids and gases and use chemical hypotheses about the appearance of thoughts, states of mind and perceptions starting from the chemical modulation of the synaptic interaction in neurons.

However, the science of the XX and XXI centuries offers probabilistic perspectives from where to study the link between the mind and the brain. The quantum mechanics and the quantum field theory gave the physicists more “degrees of freedom”.  Relatively new derivations of the quantum physics are the quantum information theory, the quantum cryptography and the quantum computing that, together with the so-called quantum biology, pave the way for new cognitive paradigm and a new psychological literature.

The study of these theories can offer new perspectives for the research on the genesis and the nature of mental illnesses.

The course will be given at the Politecnico, from 26th to 31st August  and 50 doctors from all over Italy and about 15 students of technical and physical subjects will come to Turin. They will be discussing this topic with 15 international speakers. Among them there will be Ted Dinan (Ireland), Gustav Bernroider (Austria), Paavo Pylkkanen (Finland), Mark Rasenick (Chicago, USA) and Italian lecturers Massimo Cocchi , Francesco Cappello, Giuseppe Vitiello and Alessandro Vercelli.

Politecnico di Torino is the third university thanks to the percentage of employment of its graduates

Bronze medal for the Politecnico di Torino

94% is the percentage of the students who find employment within an year after graduation from the Politecnico di Torino. This data was confirmed by the new world Graduate Employability Rankings 2019, by the prestigious British QS Institute. The Politecnico di Torino is once again on the international podium of universities which guarantee job prospects to its graduates.

The ability to ensure that its graduates will find an occupation has always been one of the qualities of the Politecnico di Torino. Yesterday, 11th September 2018, the Politecnico was awarded the bronze medal, ranking third in the world (not far from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University) and the Politecnico di Milano) according to the Graduate Employment Rate, one of the five indicators of the ranking on the employment of graduates, which this year has analysed 500 universities worldwide.

The criteria followed are: the employer reputation, partnerships with companies, the success of graduates in their careers, the presence of companies in the campus and the rate of employment of graduates within an year from graduation. It’s thanks to this last indicator, calculated as the proportion between the percentage of employment of graduates and the average of the Italian universities taken into account, that the Politecnico di Torino ranked third worldwide.

The Politecnico was also good for another indicator, according to which the university ranks second in Italy: the employer reputation, which assesses the reputation that the university has according to the employer. All in all, taking into account the five indicators and the importance they have in the ranking, the Politecnico of Torino is once again between the 121st and the 130th position and so it is in the first quartile of the best universities in the world.

“These results, which have not changed in the percentage of students employed compared to the ones of last year, show how the education of our students is still highly regarded in the labor market. The third position in the world awards our policies, which are successful despite the choice of the Politecnico di Torino to serve the country by welcoming a lot of young people and keeping taxes low. Italy, in fact, really needs graduates if it wants to remain an advanced country (as OECD has just reminded us). Thanks to the actions arranged to professionalize degrees and by proposing a didactics more and more focused on the student and enriched by the presence of entrepreneurs and professionals, we can improve even more this already impressive result”, said the rector Guido Saracco.

 

Architecture Summer Workshop at the Accademia Internazionale di Venezia

Architecture students can now sign up for the Sommerakademie Venedig 2018.

The Accademia Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia offers to architecture students from the Technische Universität Dortmund, the Politecnico di Torino, the Technical University Eindhoven and from Potsdam School of Architecture, the incredible opportunity of knowing the city of Venice and intensively studying its architecture for two weeks.
The study holiday isn’t just a course, but it also gives the chance to improve one’s knowledge by studying urban and architectural elements of a very special European city. Furthermore, meeting guests and debating with students from other schools allows for an enriching experience on both technical and cultural points of view.
The subject of the Accademia this year is “6 Piazze a Venezia”(6 Squares in Venice).  Each group (made up of German, Dutch and Italian students) will study a Square through detailed drawing. The six squares will be:

  • Campo dei Carmini
  • Campo San Paolo
  • Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio
  • Campo Santo Stefano
  • Campo dei Frari
  • Campo San Barnaba

Each square will be thoroughly measured, with perspective sketches of the façades of its buildings, as well as of spatial relations. Through careful observation, students should understand the relation between the square and the elements which define it (buildings with façades). Learning to consider materials, colours and proportions as a base for building a façade is the focus of the Accademia di Venezia this year. After the analysis, a new façade will be designed for one of the buildings surrounding the square. Students will receive support  from the TU Dortmund Architecture, with lectures on different drawing techniques; and from foreign professors, lecturing on specific subjects.

– Students attending the last year of Bachelor’s degree
– Students attending  second-level degree in Architecture for Sustainable Design, Architecture  Construction and City and Architecture for Heritage preservation and enhancement.

N.B.: The participation in the Sommerakademie requires no registration fee, each student must pay for the stay. Options of accommodation will be given to the selected students (shared apartments, approximately € 25/night). Students can choose their accomodation freely. You are allowed to leave the workshop temporarily in order to take September exams.

Torino Pride: the role of universities in the fight against discrimination

Tomorrow, Friday June 15, 2018 at 5.30 pm, in the Corte Interrata of the Politecnico di Torino (Room 8I), there will be a talk on “Il patrocinio al Torino Pride e il ruolo dell’Università nella lotta alle discriminazioni” (“sponsoring Torino Pride and the role of University in the fight against discrimination”).

Almost 50 years after the beginning of the fight for the recognition of fundamental rights, the LGBTTQI* (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, etc.) community still has too many unsatisfied and unheard demands. The community is trying to call attention on the dark and too often “slow” times we are living, concerning discrimination, violence and protecting rights.

The talk will analyse the role universities must play in the fight against discrimination, in a time marked by reactionary attitudes and exclusion of diversity. That’s why, along with the full participation of the University of Turin and of the Politecnico to the big party for the rights of the community – Torino Pride 2018 on Saturday, June 16 – there will be an area of discussion and analysis of LGBTQI topics in a particular setting: university.

AlmaLaurea: 86,4% of Polito’s graduates now employed

Last Monday, June 11, 2018, the AlmaLaurea 2018 report on the Profile and the Employment Status of Graduates was presented in Turin. Of all graduates involved, there were 6,597 from the Politecnico, of which 3,412 first-level and 3,185 second-level graduates.

The profile of the interviewed graduates confirms the high percentage of international students: 9,1% of first-level graduates (compared to 3,1% in Italy) and 13, 4% of second-level graduates (compared to 4,6% in Italy). The outcome on university experience was significant: 9 out of 10 graduates stated they are satisfied with their general university experience.

For PoliTo’s students, entering the job market already begins during university years. 46,4% of graduates has done an internship recognized by their university: 42,2% of fisrt-level graduates and 51,0% of second-level graduates (considering those who did it only during the first three years, the percentage goes up to 69,8%).

As for the employment profile, the study shows that the majority of these young people continue studying after their Bachelor’s degree course, therefore postponing their entrance to the job market after their Master’s degree course. Among first-level graduates who have never applied for a Master’s degree, therefore they started to work, the employment rate is 76,7%, compared to 71,1% nation-wide.

The most significant datum concerns second-level graduates one year after graduation: 86,4% of second-level graduates of the Politecnico is employed. This percentage is far higher than the average in Italy, 73,9%, and it is increasing compared to last year’s percentage, 83,7%. This confirms the upward trend registered by the Graduate Employability Rankings 2018 as well, made by the British institute QS by calculating the relation between the employment percentage of graduates and the average of Italian universities analysed in the ranking. The Institute certifies that the Politecnico di Torino is the first university in the world which guarantees job opportunities to its graduates.

Latest data from Almalaurea show that the percentage of employed people still increases five years after graduation, reaching 95,3%.

The wage difference between second-level graduates of the Politecnico and the Italian average is significant:  1,429 euros net per month compared to an average wage of  1,153 euros a year after graduation, and 1,741 euros compared to 1,428 euros five years after graduation.

“Th data presented today by Almalaurea confirm an upward trend which has become fundamental for our university. It’s a good sign, for students and their families, who in always larger numbers choose the Politecnico also for its job opportunities. We want to keep offering these opportunities in the future years as well, thanks to the organization of courses with a focus on diverse knowledge, teamwork and a cross-curricular challenge. This will be possible thanks to a more consistent use of innovative teaching methods, with more fieldwork, in order to create more impact on the society and increasing critical skills necessary to train future engineers, architects, designers and planners”, commented the dean Guido Saracco.

 

Admission tests for the Politecnico di Torino

All degree courses of the Politecnico di Torino require an admission test, and only a limited number of students who obtain the best scores can enrol.

The test is compulsory and different for each candidate. It consists of a set of questions, which are automatically and randomly selected by a computer. Each test has the same level of difficulty. It takes place in the Computer Labs of Politecnico’s main building or in previously-chosen venues in Italy or abroad.

Turin goes to China: a successful Shenzhen Design Week

The Turin Polytech (Politecnico di Torino) was in charge of the Italian stand at the Shenzhen Design Week, the most important event about design organised in China, of which, this year, Italy was the guest of honour. The Municipality of Turin was present at the opening

 

The Shenzhen Design Week of this year came as an Italian edition, with a significant presence of the city of Turin. The exposition, entirely devoted to design, took place from 20th to 30th of April in the Chinese city internationally recognised as capital of design and innovation and twinned with the city of Turin.

After all, Turin was promoted as World Design Capital already in 2008 and, in 2014, was the only Italian city to be included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, to which belong 26 cities worldwide, like Berlin, Saint-Étienne, Helsinki, Montreal, Shanghai and Singapore. All these cities are committed to developing and exchanging competences at an international level with the aim of strengthen the participation in design issues.

Far from being merely a strategic means for urban policies configuration, design is for Turin one of the keys for economic and social development, in close connection with the values of sustainability and decision-sharing, which have become pivotal for creating new opportunities of economic and social growth. That was the reason of the turinese institutional presence in the Asiatic city.

At its second edition, the Sherzhen Design Week is considered one of the most important events about design organised in China and this year Italy has been the guest of honour.

The Italian participation has been developed throughout the whole week through conferences, seminars and workshops that took place in the about 1300m2-large Italian stand. The setting up has been designed by the Italian Designers Association (IDA) and the Department of Architecture and Design of the Turin Polytech and can be visited up to the 4th of May.

The activity has been carried out through the base that was opened in this area by the  Polytech in 2015, the “South China- Torino Collaboration Lab”, born out of the collaboration between the Polytech with the prestigious South China University of Technology (SCUT).

 

From micro to macro: Italian designers in the South of China

The project which has been brought to China this year illustrated the project of a spoon as well as those of contemporary cities. The stand wanted to offer a completely Italian perspective of design, aiming at improving the projects of micro objects which could be interactive and inserted in a wider system. The projects, all made by Italian designers, have been developed according to different scales and are divided into four categories: Object & Fashion, Interiors & Furniture, Architecture and Urban & Territorial Planning.

Moreover, the event aimed at emphasising the significant presence of Italian designers in China.

The stand and the event have been opened by the Italian Ambassador in China Ettore Sequi , with the presence of Marco Giusta, president of the GAI (Italian Young Artists), Councillor for Policies of Support to Turin University City and  for Youth Policy of the Municipality of Turin, twinned with the city of Shenzhen and of Emilio Agagliati, Director of the Culture Department of the City of Turin.

The Turin Polytech has been represented by Michele Bonino, delegate of the Dean for Relationships with China and by Paolo Mellano, Director of the Department of Architecture and Design.

The 22nd of April, took place the Italian day, a day devoted to a reflection about Italian design and its relationships with China: organised by the Polytech of Turin, the event involved also Ole Bouman, a worldwide famous architecture and design critic.

The close cooperation between Turin and China has been also underlined by the Italian day of Research, which took place at the South China University of Technology of Guangzhou.

At the Wushan Campus, the Turin Polytech and the ScUT-South China University of Technology signed the Letter of Intentions for a new Co-Run Program in Urban Desig,

Supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

It is anticipated that the second edition of “Torino Design of the City 2018 –  Verso una città accessibile (towards an accessible city” will took place in Turin from the 12th to the 21st October. The international event counted last year by 113 appointments, 53 locations in the whole city, 60 speakers from 40 different countries, 170 delegates of the

World Design Organization (WDO)™ and more than 14 thousand participants.

 

Sicilia Coast to Coast: by foot in a slice of Sicily

There is a week’s time left in order to enrol on the Summer School “Sicilia coast to coast: camminare in territori vulnerabili” (Summer School “Sicilia coast to coast: walking in vulnerable areas”).

The initiative will bring to Sicily, in the period from 19th to 29th August 2018, 30 students and researchers for a fascinating walking tour. The itinerary, from Mazara del Vallo to Palermo, will serve to study closely the areas marked by fires, reflecting on the policies which have been adopted and the consequences of the disaster.

Mazara, Selinunte, Salemi, Segesta, Monreale, Palermo. They are only some of the cities through which students will walk during the coast to coast promoted by the Laboratorio del Cammino (Ldc) (Laboratory of the Walking) a network of students and researchers born in 2017 in the context of didactics and research promoted by the Dipartimento di Scienze, Progetto e Politiche del Territorio (DIST) del Politecnico di Torino (Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning).

The Laboratory of the Walking conceives the travel of the pedestrian as a stimulating experience, able to grasp the profiles and the hidden clues of the areas. The pedestrian observes, crosses and listen to the city from below and investigates the daily modalities of attendance and use of the spaces.

Treating patients with digital technologies: a new master for Telemedicine

Medicina e digitale: nasce il nuovo master in Telemedicina

The new Master for Telemedicine (Master in Telemedicina) of Turin Polytech, which has been realised in collaboration with the Association for University Settlings and Advanced Training in the Canavese and which is supported by ASL TO4, Althea Group, Medical Line Consulting, 3B srl and Cooperativa Sociale EDEREC, is intended for professionals that works closely to the healthcare sector: the biomedical engineers,who own skills about technology and its areas of use, and the healthcare professionals(doctors, nurses and other figures), who are aware about the assistance need of the population and the characteristics of the patients who can benefit from the service.

 

The rapid increase of the use of the information technology in all spheres of our life is affecting more and more the healthcare sector and an increase in the adoption of digital medical equipment is to be expected, both for the individual professional and for the polyclinics and social-care services. So there is the need of healthcare professionals able to cooperate with biomedical engineers, in order to correctly insert the technology in the social-care processes.

 

Today, it is difficult to plan the evolution of the demand for these skills, as currently the services which employ these technologies are relatively few. However, the entire medical sector is more and more oriented towards a medicine “at home”, enhancing the home care using telemedical technologies. These technologies will provide a better quality of the service and a reduction of indirect costs, contributing to the reduction of the demand of patient hospitalisation. In the future, skills acquired through the master will become more and more necessary for the good functioning and the adequate planning of services that will be made available for patients in a more widespread way, reducing the distances between doctors and patients and redefining the relationship with healthcare structures.

 

The Master, which will be hold at Polo Universitario Officina H of Ivrea, will last 18 months and provide 60 academic credits. The maximal number of participants is 25. the inscriptions on the website will soon be opened.

The team 2WheelsPoliTo wins the 1st round-races of the Italian Speed Championship

2WheelsPoliTo vince le gare del 1° round del Campionato Italiano Velocità

An extraordinary weekend for the two-wheel team of Politecnico of Turin, 2WheelsPoliTO, has just finished. Thanks to the Italian Motorcycle Federation’s support, the team takes part to the most important Italian speed championship on track, in the Premoto3 class, with two motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of 250 cc and a four-stroke engine.

The season has begun last weekend with the races in Misano Adriatico on the Grand Prix motorcycle track “Marco Simoncelli”, where the young racers of the team, Alberto Surra from Turin and Nikolas Marfur from Rome, competed with roughly thirty peers.

On Friday, Alberto obtained a sensational pole-position, establishing the new record of the track, while Nikolas reached the fifth place of the starting grid. In the first of the two races, the turinese recer arrived first, confirming his result in the second race, where he placed himself at the top of the board, with more than 20 points ahead his rivals. While fighting for the first places during the first race, Nikolas slided down his motorbike, luckily without injuring himself, and obtained the eight place in the second race.

The placement is the result of the hard work during the winter period, when team members, unhappy with the result of the last year (second in the final of the championship), continued the development of their prototype.

It’s an historical brace for a university team in a semi-professional competition like the Italian Speed Championship, a result which has been achieved also thankds to the enthusiasm and the willingness to improve of those who participate to the project, working at it or supporting it.

The result is even more important if we consider the first place in the classification “Costruttori”, in front of important companies in the motorcycle sector, both Italian and international.

Next date: beginng of May on the international track of Mugello, where the 2WheelsPoliTO and its racer will have to defend their first place.
