Marco Sangermano will show the new frontiers of research for the creation of artificial olfactory systems, at the Sala consiglio di facoltà of the Politecnico di Torino, on Tuesday, 15 November, at 11:00 am.

In the occasion of the award ceremony for the IBM University Award, the Professor will hold a speech entitled “From the development of polymer-based gas sensors towards the construction of an electronic nose”, explaining how the research on artificial systems that can detect odor, made great strides.

New economical polymeric materials, developed thanks to the collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and the Almaden IBM Research Center in California, will allow to switch from the production of an electronic nose for industrial or scientific purposes to a “personal e-nose“, which can be directly integrated into a smartphone.

A simple mobile device will be able very soon to emulate our olfactory function, by smelling our food in order to know its quality or identifying a flu through the breath, before having symptoms.
