UniTo is introducing Italy’s first interdisciplinary Queer Studies course, a 6-credit program that, through various modules, delves into classic themes of queer theory, such as sexual and gender orientation, feminism, and the intersectionality of different forms of discrimination. The course will be delivered entirely in English and can be included in the academic curriculum of all students at the University. This program will commence in the second semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and is formally part of the Global Law and Transnational Legal Studies degree program within the Department of Law.
The Queer Studies course, coordinated by Prof. Antonio Vercellone, a professor of private law, will feature contributions from academics and professionals from various disciplines, as well as experts from civil society. A wide range of topics will be covered during the lectures, including queer theory, the history of the LGBTQI+ movement, interdisciplinary aspects of the concept of gender, gender identity and transsexuality, gender medicine, the relationship between Christianity and homosexuality, LGBTQI+ themes in cinema and theater, sexual and gender stereotypes in the media, non-monogamies and new forms of family, emerging forms of parenthood and LGBTQI+ parenting, gender architecture, asylum and international protection for LGBTQI+ migrants, disability, sexuality and ableism, gender biases in economic theory, and much more.
“This course,” stated Prof. *Mia Caielli, President of the Comitato Unico di Garanzia of the Università di Turino, “reaffirms the commitment of Università di Torino to these themes and adds an important component to the existing teaching and research initiatives on gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity already present at our university.”
